I have been blessed. Over and over again, I have been blessed in my life. Tucking my kiddos in at bedtime, my amazing husband, witnessing the miracle of new life, coffee with my partners... I am reminded to be thankful every day. Every day. So with Thanksgiving approaching, I’ve compiled a list of thanks... doula style.
1. Babies. Fresh, squishy, snuggly new babies. That’s an easy one.
2. My partners, my team, my support. I could easily make this entire list about them! They encourage me to be the best doula, mother, wife, and woman I can be. And they’re constantly raising the bar. And let's be honest, SO much fun to hang out with!
3. My other partner, the one I share my life with and who holds our family together with my crazy schedule. Any doula will tell you that it takes a special husband to be married to a birth worker, and mine does it well. Really, really well.
4. My own babies, who are forever my ultimate blessings and who have taught me so much about birth. And life.
5. Midwives. Yep. You’re awesome.
6. OBs.
7. Nurses.
8. Bellies. Beautiful, round, full-of-life bellies.
9. Dads. Whatever role he chooses to take, however involved he wants to be, dads at births are fantastic.
10. Coffee.
11. Other doulas. Because it's nice to be with women who can casually discuss placentas and birth fluids over dinner.
12. Vaginas. Amazing, capable, stretchy, lovely vaginas.
13. Cesarean sections. Because sometimes it IS the right choice and the bravest decision.
14. The joy of visiting a new family and leaving them a little happier, better rested, and more confident than when I got there.
15. The tiny, warm weight on my chest during overnight postpartum support.
16. VBACs.
17. Breastfeeding. The way your body will continue to protect, grow, and comfort your baby even after he's born might just be the coolest thing ever.
18. That moment when a woman realizes she CAN do it!
19. Grandparents. I know firsthand how support from grandparents makes life better. And seeing someone meet her/his baby's baby for the first time always brings on the tears!
20. And while we're at it, big sisters and brothers, aunts, uncles, and cousins too.
21. Hospitals that respectfully offer options.
22. Hearing "you're worth your weight in gold!" and "thank you for being there." Never gets old.
23. Repeat clients.
24. Sleep after a long birth.
25. Our clients. We honestly have the best, most amazing clients ever! I'm so thankful for every one of you.
